AS I SEE IT 12/23/13 : Independent Wrestling helps at Christmas

Bob Magee
Pro Wrestling: Between the Sheets

This Wednesday brings Christmas Day. From PWBTS, a Merry Christmas, Happy Kwanzaa, and Happy New Year to all our readers. May you and yours celebrate the season that gives us the birth of the Child who came to liberate the world…in peace, in safety, and in joy.

A year ago, 26 adults and children lost their lives in the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School. This past Saturday, one young woman lost her life at the latest school shooting in Colorado a week earlier. Each day, children see the violence of everyday life, and the violence of wars fought on other shores. They see and suffer the verbal violence of those who use God’s name to justify hatred toward LGBT people, blacks, women, and others.

In a world like that, the Toys for Tots collections and other charity events at wrestling shows that I publicized through the Holiday season are designed to let our children keep their innocence for just a while longer.

We have one set of happy tidings to report in this week’s column. I found out that the hundreds of toys collected at the Combat Zone Wrestling Cage of Death show last week were donated to the local Ronald McDonald House in Camden, NJ. The South Jersey Ronald McDonald House provides a home-away-from-home to families of seriously ill and traumatically injured children being taken care of at Philadelphia/Camden hospitals and also operates 11 Ronald McDonald Family Rooms within pediatric units of South Jersey hospitals.

This example, and those below go to show you that wrestling fans DO have a heart. Thanks to all the fans that contributed in South Jersey and everywhere. As Christmas approaches, its a nice thought that this column contributed in a small way to children having some joy during the holidays.

Congratulations to the promotions whose Toys for Tots or other charitable efforts AS I SEE IT was able to publicize during this holiday season; including Combat Zone Wrestling, Right Coast Pro (Delaware), Pure Wrestling Association (Ontario/Canada), 3XWrestling (Des Moines, IA), Hoosier Pro Wrestling (Indiana), United Wrestling Coalition (New Jersey), Charity Appeal Wrestling Shows (United Kingdom), River City Wrestling (Texas), Chaotic Wrestling (New England), Mega Championship Wrestling (West Virginia) , ECWA Pro Wrestling (New Jersey/Delaware), Brew City Wrestling (Wisconsin), GALLI Lucha Libre (Illinois) , Classic Wrestling Association (New Jersey), Devil Mountain Wrestling (California), AAW Pro Wrestling (Illinois), Elite Canadian Championship Wrestling (western Canada), Metro Pro Wrestling (Illinois), Chaotic Wrestling (New England), North American Pro Wrestling (Illinois), Dynamite Championship Wrestling (Delaware), and Arizona Wrestling Federation (Arizona).

Until next time…
