Mav’s Comic RoundUp

by Mike “Mav” Grandizio

One of the more interesting comics I’ve been reading is “The Star Wars” from Dark Horse Comics. This isn’t the typical comic from a galaxy far, far, away, The Star Wars is a mini series that is based on the original rough draft screen play for what eventually became “A New Hope”. What surprises me the most is how radically different it is from the saga that we all know and love.

This is no mere “Alternate universe” tale where things are a little flip flopped. So far this is a VERY different story, and while some of the names and locations are the same, there is very little in this story that lines up with the traditional Star Wars Universe.

I can’t say, and won’t say that this is a better version of A New Hope, but it is interesting to see how things began. There are elements in the screen play that turn up in other Star Wars movies, and if you’re a Star Wars fan you should definitely check out how The saga began to take shape. As I understand it the art and character design are based off original Ralph McQuarrie art designs. I don’t want to go into plot details because the story is still unfolding and you can pick it up to read yourself both digitally and in print.

Are you watching Marvel’s Agents of Shield? I’m enjoying it so far, and I’m glad it got a full season order. I think there are a lot of characters who would be great in the show that may not be an easy fit into the movie universe. Luke Cage, I’m looking at you.

Dynamite Entertainment has announced a unique new series called Legendary: A Steampunk Adventure, and I’m really intrigued. the book will feature characters like Green Hornet, Vampirella, Zorro, Flash Gordon and even the Six Million Dollar Man re-imagined in a Steampunk setting. The series launches next year, but I’m guessing we’ll hear a lot about it. It has my curiosity piqued at least.

I’m very excited to check out the upcoming PBS Documentary “Superheroes: A Never Ending Battle” The Doc hits the air October 15th. I’m sure it’ll be run a few more times if you miss it. I’m gonna DVR it for sure.

This past weekend was the New York Comic Con, an event that’s quickly becoming one of the biggest comic book events of year. Of course there was TONS of news coming from the con, and in the coming weeks I’m sure I’ll be covering a lot of it.

Tune in next time, Same Mav Time, Same Mav Channel…
