Philadelphia Eagles Rant
I am back after another long hiatus. Today bear with me because I am going to write not as a blogger but as a fan.
As I write this the Philadelphia Eagles just fired defensive coordinator Juan Castillo, they sit at 3-3 after six games. Andy Reid said “We’re six games into the season & average isn’t good enough. I know the potential of our team and insist on maximizing it.” Hey Andy how about you look in the mirror? The Philadelphia Eagles will never win a Super Bowl as long as Andy Reid is the head coach.
Let’s start on the offensive side of the ball where Reid is supposed to be a guru. You have one of the premier running back in the league in LeSean McCoy who through 6 games has run the ball 111 times. That is 18.5 carries a game for 459 yards or 76.5 yards per game. Michael Vick has been sacked 17 times and thrown 8 interceptions. According to Fox in the game against the Lions Vick was hurried ten times, hit ten times and knocked down another eight times. You think if you knew offensive as well as Reid supposedly does then you would know with both Vick and McCoy you need a good offensive line in order to protect them and allow them to do what they do best which is run the football. With the personnel the Eagles have if they continue to try to throw the football more than run the ball they will continue to be a mediocre at best football team. As a coach you realize you need to play to your team’s strengths and with this team that is running the ball. The offensive line that Reid has put together does not allow you to run the ball and therefore the Eagles will continue down the same path they started with the first 6 games.
Now onto the defense, Reid hired Castillo as the defensive coordinator even with no experience on the defensive side of the football in the NFL. Reid is responsible for the hiring of his coaches and he should be the one to take responsibility if the choices he made do not work out. They have spent a lot of money on the defensive side of the ball bringing in Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie at cornerback, Cullen Jenkins and Jason Babin on the lines. The Eagles have a lot of talent on the defensive side of the ball. The problem is that they have underperformed. Is that Castillo’s fault? Maybe it is, but at this point there is only so much he can do. Andy Reid is the person who bought in the personnel that is underperforming. They did not have one sack this week against the Lions. That is absolutely inexcusable.
As fans we have had some great memories during the Reid era. Five NFC championships and one trip to the super bowl, but the bottom line is that we have had no parade down Broad Street. If year after year at work you continued to perform well but ultimately did not reach the one goal that is set for you at the beginning of each year, you would be fired no questions asked. This is exactly what has happened year after year but Reid still has a job.
This is my plea to Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie, take this old horse and take him to the glue factory. It is time for Reid to go, if your ultimate goal is to win a Super Bowl like you say every year during your state of the team address, then Reid must go and must go now. Do not wait until the end of the year, do it now! Your team is going to be 8-8 at best whether Reid is the head coach or not so why not start the next era of Eagles football. Maybe this will even allow you to go after Bill Cowher, John Gruden or any other coach that mike actually turn the Eagles into a winning football team.
Thanks for allowing me to vent as an Eagles fan. I feel so much better now.
