TV NATION

by Nick Wilkinson

Yeah Yeah! Welcome back to my little blog, followers of the great and powerful TV Nation!

Today I want to talk about undiscovered gems in television.

From time to time I come across some great television that is not only engaging and entertaining but often overlooked by the masses as a whole. These unnoticed television shows are my Top 5 Underrated Shows and I’d like to take some time and share them with the citizens of my TV Nation… Below is a WIKI based description (if available) and a link to check out the shows. Let me know what you think and I’d love to talk about them with you in the comments section too.

  1. BANSHEE – CINEMAX – Banshee takes place in the fictional small town of Banshee, Pennsylvania. After serving 15 years in prison for stealing diamonds from a Ukrainian gangster called Mr. Rabbit, the unnamed protagonist travels to Banshee to find his heist accomplice and former lover, Anastasia. When he finds her, the protagonist learns that she is now a married mother of two living under the assumed identity of Carrie Hopewell. Later, when the incoming Sheriff is killed, the protagonist takes on his identity as Lucas Hood, becoming the town’s new Sheriff. Banshee sees Hood struggle with adapting to his new identity while dealing with the machinations of local crime lord Kai Proctor, and remaining hidden from Rabbit.

  2. HELL ON WHEELS – AMC – In 1865, a former Confederate soldier, Cullen Bohannon (Anson Mount) journeys to the Union Pacific Railroad’s westward construction of the first transcontinental railroad to seek work and vengeance on the Union soldiers that have killed his wife and son. Cullen gets hired by the railroad and supervises an all-black “cut crew,” one of which is Elam (Common), to prepare the terrain for track laying. Through conversation, Cullen learns more about his wife’s death from railroad foreman Daniel Johnson (Ted Levine), who knows the name of her murderer. But tragedy strikes before this name is given. Thomas “Doc” Durant (Colm Meaney) begins his “mad, noble quest” to expand his Union Pacific Railroad westward in order to complete the transcontinental railroad. Lily Bell (Dominique McElligott), accompanies her ailing husband Robert (Robert Moloney) as he surveys the landscape for the Union Pacific. Robert is killed by the Cheyenne natives and Lily must cope with being a widow on foreign soil. Reverend Nathaniel Cole (Tom Noonan) baptizes Joseph Black Moon (Eddie Spears), a Cheyenne, then takes him under his tutelage in the church. Season one ends with Bohannon killing a man whom he believes was responsible for the rape and murder of his wife only to find out that the man was not there at the time and that he had killed the wrong man.

  3. RECTIFY – SUNDANCE – Daniel Holden was imprisoned as a teenager for the rape and murder of his 16-year-old girlfriend, Hanna. New DNA evidence vacates his original trial and he returns to his hometown of Paulie, Georgia after spending 19 years on death row. The subsequent adjustments and events in the lives of Daniel, his extended family, and the townfolk are related as a character study in a slowly unfolding Southern Gothic story.

  4. STRIKE BACK – CINEMAX –
This show is about SAS & CIA agents who team up to track down terrorists. Think 24 meets the most badass military video game you ever played. Throw in some boobies for good measure and you have a hit!

Season 1 (UK) was sometimes called Chris Ryan’s Strike Back. Season 2 (Season 1 on Cinemax and a sort of reboot) is sometimes called Strike Back: Project Dawn. Season 3 (Season 2 on Cinemax) is called Vengeance… Season 4 is coming this summer.

Seasons 1 or Chris Ryan’s Strike Back is a 6 part mini-season that aired in the UK. You do not need to have seen this in order to pick up with Season 2 (or Season 1 on Cinemax) because they rebooted the story and tied up the loose ends left by the 6 part show… However, it is fantastic and I think you should give it a shot if you can find it.

  5. THE INBETWEENERS – UK – The Inbetweeners was a British sitcom which aired for three series from 2008 to 2010 on E4. Created and written by Damon Beesley and Iain Morris, the show followed the life of suburban teenager Will McKenzie (Simon Bird), and three of his friends at the fictional Rudge Park Comprehensive. The episodes involved situations of school bullying, broken family life, indifferent school staff and largely failed sexual encounters.

DONT CONFUSE THIS WITH THE SHITTY US VERSION!
