We’ll do this once a year and I’ll spotlight what I think was a knockout in every category. Feel free to email us your opinions, suggestions & hate mail. TotallyTVNation@gmail.com

Best Movie of 2013 – Mud – Mud is an adventure about two boys, Ellis and his friend Neckbone, who find a man named Mud hiding out on an island in the Mississippi. This movie has a very real Tom Sawyer-esq backbone to it and is brilliant in both the coming of age story it tells and the performances by Reese Witherspoon & Matthew McConaughey.
Best New TV Show of 2013 – The Originals (CW) – Like Angel/Buffy this Vampire Diaries spin-off stands very much on its own and in all honesty may be a better program all around than the show that gave it birth. A spin-off from The Vampire Diaries and set in New Orleans, The Originals centers on the Mikaelson siblings, otherwise known as the world’s original vampires: Klaus (Joseph Morgan), Elijah (Daniel Gillies), and Rebekah (Claire Holt). It was revealed during the backdoor pilot, aired on the April 25, 2013 episode of The Vampire Diaries, that recurring werewolf character Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) is pregnant with Klaus’ child. Upon his return to New Orleans Klaus must take down his protégé, Marcel (Charles Michael Davis) and reclaim “his” city.

Best Tech of 2013 – Netflix – It was a huge year for Netflix and web-only content, which made history for taking home three Emmy Awards for its original series House of Cards. After bouncing back from a tough 2011 when CEO Reed Hastings tried to split the company into two entities, Netflix’s subscription numbers and stock soared in 2013. The success of several of its web-only series, including Orange Is the New Black, have caused other web streaming services like Hulu and Amazon Prime to get into the original content game, too.
