Weekly Angst

By Nick Wilkinson

Greetings angsters! Here in this edition of The Weekly Angst I wanted to talk about the ABC Family series TWISTED. In my opinion Twisted is one of the best new shows this fall and although it’s on ABCFamily it’s not just for tweens.

The series focuses on charming sixteen-year-old Danny Desai (Avan Jogia), who killed his aunt when he was eleven. Having spent five years in juvenile detention, he is released and returns to his hometown of Green Grove, New York. While trying to rekindle old friendships and facing the challenges of dealing with his judgmental peers, Danny becomes the prime suspect in the murder of a classmate. Realizing the town does not care about the truth and only wants to see him charged with the crime, Danny becomes determined to clear his name. Meanwhile, he must maintain a secret he has never told anyone: the reason he killed his aunt.

I went into this pilot not really expecting much for the show. I was unfamiliar with most of the cast but figured I would give it a chance since it’s in the angst wheel house. Boy am I glad I did!

Sure, it’s full of teen angst and the underlying stories are what you would expect from an ABC Family orignal series but it’s the main storyline & lead actor that really take this show above & beyond expectations. Avan Jorgia (of Victorious) has a career chaning role in Danny Desai and his approach to the character not only feels authentic but makes you ask the question, “Is Danny a ‘Socio” like some claim or is their a deeper truth behind what drove an 11 year old boy to strangle his aunt to death with a jump rope in their family home.

The supporting cast includes Denise Richards as Danny’s step mother who recently lost Danny’s father to a boating accident and is now trying to pick up the pieces of her broken family while supporting her step sons reintegration into the community. While season 1’s “Who Killed The Classmate” storyline might read familiar to Pretty Little Liar fans it has become very obvious that this is only the tip of the mystery iceberg.

The first 11 episodes of Twisted are available via the internet & streaming services like Netflix. The rest of Season 1 will return in January, 2014 (although rumors say it may not be till February).

If your an angster or just like a good mystery Twisted is worth taking a peek at and Avan Jorgia is a name I will be looking forward to in the future.

Stay frosty, or something like that.
