Zelda’s Wisdom : Would You Like a Raise with That?

Would you like a raise with that?

If anyone has been paying attention to the news lately, McDonald’s and other chain employee’s are asking for a raise. How much you ask? More than what most of us make as a starting wage. Currently in the United States the minimum wage for such employees is $7.50 an hour. Now they want $15.00 an hour. That means their yearly income would go from 15,000 to 30,000.

On July 30, 2013, in cities such as New York City, St. Louis, and Detroit (who is broke already) went on strike to show their desire for such wages. The group, who called themselves the Fast Food Forward Campaign, organized the strike. In the United States, about 1/3 of Americans earn less than 24,000 a year. So what makes them think they are going to make more than the average Joe who will possibly have a college degree and a starting wage of 24,000 a year from now?

Americans who don’t work in the fast food industry argue that these types of jobs are more part-time jobs and not full-time jobs. I absolutely agree. If you are 25 years and older you should not be working at McDonalds. I’m sorry, that’s ridiculous. For one thing I can’t find a man or woman who finds that hot. Call me a bitch if you want to, but if you have a degree, and/or you are just that lazy, I don’t want to be with someone like that.

On the other hand when the economy was bad, yes there were people who swallowed their pride to put food on the table for their kids in jobs such as these. That, I think, is the only reason for an adult to have a job there. Teenagers are supposed to have that job hence the term “part-time job”. Any fast food company is usually everyone’s first job. That’s because it’s an easy job, and very flexible with hours. So, if a 17 year old is going to make $15 an hour and I’m going to make less saving lives then we have a problem there.

Lastly, I want to bring up a valid point. I know I keep picking on McDonald’s but, whatever, I like Wendy’s more. For those pesky people who fight over statistics, I got these numbers from CNN for your information. Sources such as CNN say McDonald’s made $5.5 billion in profits in 2012. So please, ask me why they pay their employees such little if they are sitting pretty on their Big Mac’s? (ha-ha I made a funny!)
